Serengeti National Park
Stand on the Serengeti plains at dawn as lion cubs tumble over their mother. Watch a cheetah explode into acceleration at 110km/h. See the horizon darken with a million wildebeest. The Serengeti does not disappoint.
Lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, hippo, crocodile
Ngorongoro Crater
You stand on the rim. Six hundred metres below, 120,000 animals move through the mist. The crater floor is an ancient kingdom sealed by geology — and no animal can leave. This is the closest thing on Earth to a natural ark.
Black rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, hippo, flamingo, zebra, wildebeest
Tarangire National Park
The Tarangire River bends between ancient baobabs as a herd of 300 elephants crosses at the ford. The dust rises gold in the afternoon light. This is the Africa that has existed for ten thousand years.
Elephant (herds of 300+), lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, greater kudu, fringe-eared oryx, baobab birds
Zanzibar Island
After days of dust and predators, the turquoise Indian Ocean spreads before you from a white coral beach. Stone Town's labyrinthine alleys hold centuries of spice trade history. Zanzibar is Africa's most elegant exhale.
Zanzibar red colobus monkey (endemic), sea turtle, spinner dolphin, tropical reef fish
Ruaha National Park
Ruaha is wild Africa without witnesses. Your vehicle is the only one for 50 kilometres. A pack of 20 painted dogs brings down an impala on the river bank. The Great Ruaha is the axis of an ecosystem untouched.
African wild dog, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, greater kudu, roan antelope, sable antelope
Maasai Mara National Reserve
The Mara River is chaos and drama — 10,000 wildebeest on the bank, then the first brave animal commits, and the stampede begins. Crocodiles surge. Lions position at the exit. This is nature without edit.
Lion (500+), leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, hippo, Nile crocodile
Amboseli National Park
A herd of 150 elephants moves across the Amboseli plain as Kilimanjaro rises 5,895 metres behind them. The sky is impossible blue. This is the photograph that made Africa famous — and it is real.
Elephant (1,500), lion, cheetah, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, Maasai giraffe, ostrich
Samburu National Reserve
A reticulated giraffe — its coat a mosaic of geometric polygons unlike any other giraffe — bends to the Ewaso Nyiro River. A leopard watches from a doum palm. Samburu is Kenya's least-visited and most distinctive park.
Reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, leopard, elephant, lion
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
The forest swallows you. Three hours of climbing bamboo and Hagenia. Then your guide stops. There — 3 metres away — a silverback sits, watching you with eyes that hold 98% of your own DNA. Time dissolves.
Mountain gorilla, chimpanzee, L'Hoest's monkey, colobus, forest elephant, 350+ bird species
Queen Elizabeth National Park
A lion pride lounges in a fig tree, 6 metres above the Ishasha plains. Below, a pod of 200 hippos fills the Kazinga Channel. Nobody knows definitively why Ishasha's lions climb. Queen Elizabeth simply does things differently.
Tree-climbing lion, elephant, hippo, buffalo, Uganda kob, Nile crocodile, 600+ birds
Volcanoes National Park
The Virunga mist shifts. A silverback — the Agashya group's patriarch — approaches within 2 metres. His gaze is ancient and utterly calm. Rwanda's gorillas have been habituated for decades. They are not afraid of you.
Mountain gorilla, golden monkey, forest buffalo, forest elephant, 200+ bird species
Akagera National Park
Akagera was broken, then reborn. Walking with the rangers who brought the lions and rhinos back — who watched the first calves born in 25 years — is to understand that Africa's story is not finished.
Lion, black rhino, elephant, hippo, buffalo, leopard, zebra, topi, 500+ birds
Nyungwe Forest National Park
A group of 400 black-and-white colobus monkeys erupts from the forest canopy around you. You are 50 metres above the ground on a suspension bridge, swaying in the Nyungwe mist. Below: Africa's oldest rainforest. Above: the source of the Nile.
Chimpanzee (500+), colobus (groups of 400), L'Hoest's monkey, 300+ birds including Albertine Rift endemics
Murchison Falls National Park
The entire Victoria Nile — the same water that will flow to Khartoum, Cairo, and the Mediterranean — forces through a gap 7 metres wide in a curtain of white force and mist. Below: 300 hippos. On the bank: elephants drinking. This is the spine of Africa.
Hippopotamus (3,000+), Nile crocodile, elephant, lion, Uganda kob, giraffe, shoebill stork
Lake Nakuru National Park
The lake shore is solid pink — moving, fluid pink that resolves into a million flamingos. The smell hits before the sight does. A white rhino grazes the treeline above the lake. Lake Nakuru packs spectacle into a small and perfect package.
Flamingo (up to 1 million), white rhino, Rothschild giraffe, lion, leopard, waterbuck, pelican
